In recognition of and pursuant to the highest aspirations of social and cultural heritage and awareness, the Black Student Union seeks to form unification within the African American community, other minority organizations and the rest of the University to promote a genuine, multicultural environment on campus that encourages opportunities for interaction and communication between all students faculty and staff.
The purpose of the Black Student Union is to observe and improve the general welfare of black students as well as race relations on the campus of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Serving as a unit to promote leadership as well as pre-professional development and when appropriate, recommend to administrative officials, corrective actions when areas of concern emerge that negatively affect black students.
The forerunner of the Black Student Union, Wantu Wazuri was established on December 9th, 1970 to support the development of Black Student life.
The name changed from Wantu Wazuri to its present name, The Black Student Union.
